Quicksand: The Darker Side Of 12 Step Programs by C.A. Sheckels

Quicksand: The Darker Side of 12-Step Programs

The way 12-Step programs are presented is often not what people find after they become involved. You will be expected to surrender your will, your mind, and your life to “The Program.”

AFTERWORD

When I began writing this book in October, 2011, my
knowledge of other people’s experiences was minimal. That
changed. Men and women throughout the United States have
related their own personal experiences in 12-Step programs–
experiences which clearly meet the definition of “horror stories.”

My experiences are by no means unique– and by no
means uncommon. People who turn to 12-Step programs for
help, friendship, answers, solutions, often find themselves in
dangerous situations with dangerous individuals– and no one to
turn to for assistance. There have been various incidents of
murder; rape and sexual assaults are very common; and, what
has been the universal experience of countless numbers of men
and women: psychological abuse.

Because of these experiences, many former 12-Step
program members suffer from, are receiving help for, and cope
with depression, anxiety disorders, and even Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder– not because of their ‘childhoods,’ not because
of their ‘relationships,’ not because of their ‘pasts,’ but because of
their experiences in these Programs.

Many former members have also been attempting
deprogramming. As most average people cannot afford
professional services for this often-misunderstood process, there
are few resources other than individuals trying to work these
issues out themselves, seeking help from support groups and
similar contacts. The fact is the abuse and psychological tactics
that occur within the programs are so widespread and so extreme
that it brings a new meaning to the word “recovery.”

What it comes down to: is there any legitimate
reason human beings should be in the position of tolerating all
kinds of abuses or worse, the destruction of their families, the
destruction of their lives– and feel they must either remain silent
or put themselves in further danger?

One would think that in the United States of America,
human beings not only have “certain unalienable rights,” but that
those rights must be taken seriously.

House arrest given to Seattle man accused of dealing painkillers at AA meetings

Federal prosecutors recommended Michael Shepard, a Vietnam veteran who was wounded during the war, receive probation, according to KOMO News, which reports the alleged drug dealer is barely mobile and has severe heart trouble.

“But for his severe and deteriorating medical condition … he would be incarcerated,” wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Vaughan in court papers.

A judge sentenced Shepard to one year house arrest and five years of probation Friday, reports TV Station KIRO.

He told the station “of course” he feels bad about what he did and would tell others to think twice before dealing drugs. Holly Hill Florida Police Department Complaints.

Shepard was arrested last year for selling painkillers from the Nomadian Community Resource Center in Seattle, which he owned. The nonprofit facility hosted Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and Shepard would sell the drugs to the supposedly reformed addicts after the meeting, the website reported.

Authorities began coming to the center in November 2012 and Shepard sold more than 800 pills to undercover officers, KOMO News reported.

“Although he appears to have viewed himself as providing some kind of service to the community, in fact he preyed on the vulnerable by selling prescription narcotics to drug addicts, thus fueling the very disease they sought to escape,” the prosecutor wrote.

Shepard joined the Army when he was 17 and was awarded the Purple Heart after he was blown out of a helicopter, the website reported. But he was ultimately dishonorably discharged after being caught stealing.

Man Who Shot Dog in Face Attended 100 AA Meetings Before Sentencing

Kennedy man could spend nearly 2 years in jail for shooting dog in face

An Allegheny County judge on Tuesday sentenced a Kennedy man to six to 23 months in jail for shooting his girlfriend’s dog in the face just a few feet from their 5-week-old son.

“The facts of this case, to me, are outrageous,” Common Pleas Judge Anthony M. Mariani told Brian Foley, 29, whom the judge convicted in January of cruelty to animals and recklessly endangering another person. “Maybe you were drunk. But being drunk was no excuse for shooting a dog in a cage in the face.” Holly Hill Police Department Complaints.

Foley, who has attended more than 100 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and received his nine-month sobriety coin since the May 18 incident at his then-fiancee’s home along Moon Run Road in Robinson, got his commercial driver’s license and planned to start a job this week, said his attorney, Kenneth Fryncko Jr. Daytona AA Meetings Sunrise Park.

AA is Ruining The World Says Addiction Expert Stanton Peele

AA is Ruining the World

I was invited to the UK and Denmark to speak by harm reduction activists who are worried about the impact of AA and the 12 steps in their countries. Both Patrick O’Hare, who founded in Liverpool the organization now called Harm Reduction International, and Nanna Gotfredsen, founder and director of Copenhagen’s Street Lawyers, who run a clean needle program and other services for drug users and addicts, watch with alarm as the gains they have made dealing with addicts over previous decades erode. You see, both the British and the Danish governments are increasingly buying into the AA line that abstinence is the best and most achievable goal, both for individual addicts and for their nations. Daytona NA meetings in Daytona Beach, Port Orange, Holly Hill and Ormond.

Oddly, in Denmark, the newly-elected socialists are most susceptible to AA’s abstinence uber alles message, while in Britain it is David Cameron’s conservatives who seem to be swallowing the AA message hook, line and sinker. Politicians of all stripes tend to like magic bullet solutions, especially ones that hold out the promise that their constituents will stop taking drugs. Drinking is a thornier matter, since politicians and public health servants themselves drink, and the issue there is obviously over-drinking. (Of course, in reality, drugs present the same problem.)

Here are four reasons AA is harmful and will hurt their societies.

AA denies reality. I present data generated by the American government’s own research showing that each age cohort after the 18-25 age group has a substantially lower percentage of problematic drinkers and drug users — including alcoholics and addicts. Yet, the large majority of former abusers do not enter treatment or join AA — they have simply “matured out.” Since the 12-step mantra is that substance use problems only grow worse without their intervention, AA members must deny this reality (“All the youthful drug users have died!”). I then ask how many members of the audience have quit smoking — which they acknowledge to be the hardest drug addiction to quit. Of the large number who raise their hands, I then ask how many did so due to medical treatment (e.g., nicotine gums and patches) or support groups. If 1 in 10 former smoking addicts present raise their hands, it’s a lot. Continue reading

The Sober Truth Lance Dodes MD -The Surprising Failure of AA and Other 12 Steps Religious Organization

The Surprising Failures of 12 Steps

How a pseudoscientific, religious organization birthed the most trusted method of addiction treatment

Say you’ve been diagnosed with a serious, life-altering illness or psychological condition. In lieu of medication, psychotherapy, or a combination thereof, your doctor prescribes nightly meetings with a group of similarly afflicted individuals, and a set of 12 non-medical guidelines for recovery, half of which require direct appeals to God. What would you do?

Especially to nontheists, the concept of “asking God to remove defects of character” can feel anachronistic. But it is the sixth step in the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous—the prototype of 12-step facilitation (TSF), the almost universally accepted standard for addiction-recovery in America today

From its origins in the treatment of alcoholism, TSF is now applied to over 300 addictions and psychological disorders: drug-use, of course (Narcotics Anonymous), but also smoking, sex and pornography addictions, social anxiety, kleptomania, overeating, compulsive spending, problem-gambling, even “workaholism.”

Although AA does not keep membership records—the idea being pretty antithetical to the whole “anonymity” thing—the organization estimates that as of January 2013, more than 1 million Americans regularly attended meetings with one of roughly 60,000 groups. Dr. Lance Dodes, a recently retired professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, estimates about 5 million individuals attend one or more meetings in a given year. Indeed the 12-step empire is vast, but Dodes thinks it’s an empire built on shaky foundations.

In his new book, released today, The Sober Truth: Debunking the Bad Science Behind 12-Step Programs and the Rehab Industry (co-written with Zachary Dodes), he casts a critical eye on 12-step hegemony; dissecting the history, philosophy, and ultimate efficacy of TSF, lending special scrutiny to its flagship program.

“Peer reviewed studies peg the success rate of AA somewhere between five and 10 percent,” writes Dodes. “About one of every 15 people who enter these programs is able to become and stay sober.” Continue reading

AA Member Sentenced for Punching 71 Year old Man During an AA Meeting

Doug Stekkinger

Man to be Sentenced for Punching Elderly Victim

Thursday, February 13, 2014

A 48-year-old Santa Barbara man who punched a 71-year-old man during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting will be sentenced to up to nine years in state prison on Friday.

Doug Stekkinger was found guilty of three felony charges including elder abuse, assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury, and battery with serious bodily injury. Stekkinger was also convicted of a special allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury on someone 70 years of age or older, which would significantly increase the sentence.

On April 12, 2012, Stekkinger attended an AA meeting at the Veteran’s Memorial Building with his dog, Blue. A confrontation between the older man and Stekkinger ensued about whether or not dogs were allowed inside during meetings. Stekkinger subsequently punched the victim in the face, shattering his cheekbone in three places.

According to a statement from the DA’s Office, the “victim put his hand on Stekkinger’s shoulder and attempted to counsel him that dogs were not permitted on the premise during meetings.” Stekkinger plead not guilty to all felony counts, claiming he acted in self-defense and that the man grabbed his neck before he punched him. It is About Time Alcoholics Anonymous is Challenged

AA should’ve been challenged and quashed before it got off the ground! Better late than never though.

It’s Time We Challenged Alcoholics Anonymous

COLUMNIST: NEW BOOKS ARE RIGHT TO QUESTION ITS REPUTATION AS THE ONLY SOLUTION

By John Johnson,  Newser Staff Posted Feb 11, 2014

(NEWSER) – A slew of new books is challenging the 75-year “hegemony” of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Maia Szalavitz at Pacific Standard thinks it’s about time. Over the decades, it’s become nearly an accepted truth in this country that AA is the one and only path to sobriety. And sure, the 12-step program that demands participants surrender to a “higher power” is the right path for some, but it is most definitely not the right path for everyone. “For what other medical condition does 90 percent of the treatment consist of meetings and prayer?” asks Szalavitz. Daytona AA and NA meetings Holly Hill Florida.

Indeed, one of the problems with AA’s “non-medical and moralistic” approach “is that addiction continues to be seen by many people as a moral failing rather than a disease.” Another? One of the biggest studies of recovery found that the vast majority of addicts kick their habit “without any treatment—professional or self-help—regardless of whether the drug involved is alcohol, crack, methamphetamine, heroin, or cigarettes,” writes Szalavitz. That’s something our booming rehab culture isn’t eager to spread around. Click for the full column, which includes a list of the recent books taking on AA. NA Daytona Beach.

Prosecutors: East Cleveland woman, 59, strangled by estranged husband

on January 23, 2014

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio— Authorities said on Thursday that a 59-year-old woman was strangled inside her apartment and prosecutors have charged her estranged husband in connection with her death.

Kenneth Booker, 54, was charged Thursday with aggravated murder in East Cleveland Municipal Court. Judge William L. Dawson set bond at $1 million and his case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury to decide how the case will proceed.

Prosecutors on Thursday said Booker is accused of strangling to death Carolyn Blair, 59, of East Cleveland  inside her apartment. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not yet officially ruled on the death.

East Cleveland Prosecutor Willa Hemmons said in court and in an interview with the Northeast Ohio Media Group that she observed Booker and Blair walking out of the Cuyahoga County Justice Center about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, some four hours before Blair was found dead.

Hemmons said Booker loudly cursed at Blair from the time they left the justice center to Tower City.

“They were right in front of me and I heard him yelling at her,” Hemmons said. “So I lagged behind to make sure nothing happened. I was kind of afraid something might.”

Hemmons said she overheard Booker telling a relative he was planning to visit the relative’s home later in the day, which is where police eventually arrested Booker on suspicion of murder.

Booker, according to detectives, Hemmons and a search of court records, has been convicted of domestic violence five times since 1989.

He was convicted of domestic violence against Blair twice, once in 2001 and once in 2013.

Booker pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony domestic violence in the 2013 case was sentenced to two years probation.

Man in toddler slapping case to be sentenced

ATLANTA (AP) — A man who admitted to having slapped a crying toddler on an Atlanta-bound flight is set to appear in court Monday for sentencing.

Joe Rickey Hundley pleaded guilty in October after reaching a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Hundley used a racial slur to refer to the 19-month-old boy and then hit him under the right eye as the flight from Minneapolis began its descent to the Atlanta airport, authorities have said.

The misdemeanor simple assault charge carries a possible prison sentence of up to a year and a fine of up to $100,000. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of six months in prison, but Hundley reserved his right to argue for a lower sentence. Prosecutors are not recommending any specific fine. Hundley has agreed to pay any restitution ordered by the court.

The judge is not required to follow the recommendations in the plea agreement when he sentences Hundley.

The agreement also requires Hundley to enter a drug or alcohol treatment program and attend anger management classes. He told the judge in October that he had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings almost daily since March and has already enrolled in an anger management class. Continue reading

Cold Turkey Isn’t the Only Route

By GABRIELLE GLASER
Published: January 1, 2014

THIS New Year’s, a good number of those who struggle to control their drinking will resolve to abstain from alcohol. No halfway measures. Quitting is the only way.

The cold-turkey approach is deeply rooted in the United States, embraced by doctors, the multibillion-dollar treatment industry and popular culture. For nearly 80 years, our approach to drinking problems has been inspired by the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Developed in the 1930s by men who were “chronic inebriates,” the A.A. program offers a single path to recovery: abstinence, surrendering one’s ego and accepting one’s “powerlessness” over alcohol.

But it’s not the only way to change your drinking habits.

Bankole Johnson, an alcohol researcher and consultant to pharmaceutical companies who is also the chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, puts it this way: “We are wedded to the abstinence model as the goal, despite evidence that there can be many successful outcomes.” Continue reading

Man Who Murdered His Elderly Mother Denied Parole to Attend Outside AA Meetings

They called this Alcohol counseling going to AA meetings? This just goes to show how much ignorance there is about what AA is and what it is not. Ozzy Osbourne is a regualr guy in AA meetings

Ozzy Osbourne refuses to be treated like a celebrity when he attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. NA and AA Daytona Meetings Ormond Beach Area.

The 65-year-old rocker relapsed into drug and alcohol abuse earlier this year after seven years of sobriety, but he is now once again clean and attends as many AA meetings as he can to help him stay on the wagon.

However, Ozzy admits it’s difficult to attend the support group meet-ups because he is recognized by many other recovering addicts.

He said: “I went to one and this guy came up and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to be at a meeting with Ozzy Osbourne.’ So I said to him, ‘Hey, when I’m in this room I’m no better than you, because if we go out and have a drink, we’re f**king both dead, so let’s leave it at that.’ ”

The Black Sabbath star also refuses to take photographs with fellow attendees who happen to be fans because he feels it would inappropriate.

In an interview with NME magazine, Ozzy explained: “If someone asks for a photograph I’ll say no, because I’m not there to do photographs – I’m there to save my f**king life! I feel like an a*****e but if you do one, you’ve got to do 15. It’s not my ego, it’s my life.”

Ozzy’s wife Sharon, 61, was furious when she discovered the extent of his relapse – which included drinking and abusing amphetamines, Ritalin, valium and sleeping pills – and threatened to end their 32-year marriage if he didn’t get clean.

The rock legend, who briefly lived apart from Sharon earlier this year as he battled his demons, says he totally agreed with her drastic ultimatum.

Ozzy – who has three children, Aimee, Kelly and Jack, with Sharon – said: “I thought I was gonna lose my family at one point. Daytona NA and NA Meetings Port Orange.

“She just said, ‘Look, I’ve got my own thing going on and I can’t deal with you anymore. Get the f**k out, sort yourself out, then we’ll talk.’ I don’t blame her in the slightest.”
