Church Will Stop Hosting Alcohol Anonymous Meetings After Complaints From Neighbors

Alcoholics Anonymous left homeless in Paso Robles

Support groups will need to find a new meeting place by February 2017

–Leaders at St. James Episcopal Church will stop hosting meetings for Alcoholics Anonymous and similar support groups after being pressured by the city and receiving complaints about the meetings from neighbors. NA Daytona Meetings in Park.

Paso Robles city officials met with parishioners at the church earlier this year advising them the group meetings are “non-church” activities and require a special permit.

The church asked the Paso Robles Planning Commission for a conditional use permit on Nov. 8. The commission heard from church members in favor of the permit and neighbors opposed to it. Neighbors Mark Brown and Brian Bengard complained about parking on the street, noise of people talking, and hours of operation.

The commission declined to approve the permit and instead asked for mediation between parishioners and neighbors. But, after one mediation session, church leaders decided to stop hosting the support meetings at the end of Feb. 2017.

Saint James’ currently hosts 27 weekly meetings for Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and Overeaters Anonymous. In addition, lunch was served for the hungry of Paso Robles. The church, founded in 1891, has hosted AA meetings since 1949. AA Daytona have dangerous violent felons at meetings.

“When faced with the inevitable fact that a significant number of meetings would possibly be minimized due to the permit requirement, we decided to withdraw our application and help the groups find other venues for their meetings,” said Corporate Secretary Michael Coffin for the church and a member of the church council.

“We felt it wouldn’t be fair to limit the number of meetings any particular group could host, or limit which groups could host meetings in general. As a church we don’t want to be in the position to deny meetings that are important for supporting people. We decided to help the groups find space where they can meet as often as they need rather than force them into a schedule with us that won’t be workable.”

“Addiction does not have a time clock, when they need a meeting they need a meeting,” said Coffin. “This is a great opportunity for community organizing. This will bring the council people and the city members together to help our community. Some groups have already reached out to the city to find new locations and they are all actively working to find new meeting locations by February.”

Planning Commission Chairman Bob Rollins, who recommended mediation, said, “This is really unfortunate as there is a very real need for someone or someplace in the city to accommodate these meetings. It is an important issue for these people and I suspect that maybe it is better to divide up the meetings, so that the burden would not be on one facility to host all weekly meetings.”

Neighbor Mark Brown was pleased with the outcome. “The situation has been resolved, by talks being done closely and directly between the church and residents, with support of the city… without dissent and with everyone involved on good working terms,” he said.

Statement from St. James Episcopal Church’s permit application

“Meeting both the spiritual and temporal needs of Paso Robles defines the mission of our church and harkens to the most basic social responsibility that we as citizens are called to provide: basic care for each other. This mission must also be carried out with our dual responsibility to be a good neighbor to those with whom we share our geographical location. It is a balancing act that requires all parties to work closely together in the efforts to help those in need and to provide a safe and healthy neighborhood for all.

Through attention to facility use (including entrance/exit of attendees), parking considerations, and hours of use, we believe Saint James’ is being a responsible neighbor and still providing for the vital needs of our community. We look forward to working closely with our neighbors and city government to be a beacon of hope for our friends and families in need for generations to come.”

Unease over location of Narcotics Anonymous meetings

The landlords and parents of Chico State students who reside near the intersection of Cherry and Sixth streets are a bit up in arms these days over a new neighbor who’s moved into the building that for years housed Ed’s Printing.

The new neighbor is technically the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, a local church that hosts Narcotics Anonymous meetings in the building. The meetings began in May. The building, located at 550 Cherry St., is owned by the “Gordon G. Living Grier Trust.”

The concerns voiced by the landlords and parents are directed at the people who come to the 17 weekly NA meetings, stand outside the building and smoke cigarettes, and, according to some, spread needles on the sidewalks. They also allegedly go through trash receptacles and make unsavory remarks to the young women who live nearby or walk past on their way to school. Robert Combs is the parent of a student currently attending Chico State. He says his daughter and roommate had to move out of a nearby house because of the presence of attendees at the NA meetings. Combs is a Chico State graduate and is president of the school’s Parent Advisory Council.

In an email titled “Has Chico Lost its Sense of Place?” Combs writes that his daughter “was very concerned to see those seeking counseling were loitering outside the facility prior to meetings, smoking, going through the students’ garbage and making lewd comments to our young adults, many of whom are on their own for the first time.” Continue reading

Two separate incidents at two separate Starbucks in San Francisco involved suspects using scalding hot water as a weapon.

Three unrelated criminal cases in which scalding water or coffee was used as a weapon are being handled with care, according to San Francisco prosecutors.

Men with apparently hot tempers were recently arrested in connection with unrelated attacks at two Starbucks outlets and an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

The latest incident occurred March 31 when a man allegedly poured coffee on the leader of an AA meeting at 20th and Lexington streets in the Mission district. The suspect, 28-year-old Armando Rodriquez of San Francisco, landed in hot water when he was charged with felonious mayhem and assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury. He remains in custody on $100,000 bail. Continue reading

Some neighbors around Vreeland Avenue in the east part of town took their complaints against Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church to the Nutley Board of Education on Monday. They claimed the meetings attract dangerous people.

Following their plea to the Nutley Board of Commissioners, Holy Trinity neighbors took their complaints about Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to the Nutley Board of Education on Monday.

Following their plea to the Nutley Board of Commissioners, Holy Trinity neighbors took their complaints about Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to the Nutley Board of Education on Monday.

Resident Melanie Mitrano-Duffy said the meetings are too close to schools, especially when children are out to lunch.

AA meets in the evening, and NA meets midday.

Referring to the member anonymity, Mitrano-Duffy said parents can’t determine if the attendees are registered sex offenders, which should be public under Megan’s Law. She said the Walker Middle School and Yantacaw Elementary School principals share the concerns.

She said she spoke by phone with an Essex County senior parole officer, who stated there’s a percentage of sex offenders at AA and NA meetings in Essex County. He also said convicted criminals are mandated to attend to attend these meetings, she stated.

She wanted the district’s support to move these meetings somewhere else and wanted the public to be aware of them.

Another resident said parking problems could arise near the middle school when school is in session.

Neighbors addressed the Nutley Board of Commissioners two weeks ago, regarding the alleged bad behavior and illegal parking by attendees of AA and NA meetings at Holy Trinity. At a previous conference of church members, neighbors and police and neighbors, it was decided to move the NA meetings to two other locations, beginning in July.

The church and neighbors now disagree whether the AA meetings should continue there, Mitrano-Duffy told the Sun.

Board of Education Vice President Tom Sposato said, presiding over Monday’s meeting, the district would look into the matter before the board discusses it as a whole. The board needs to investigate whether or not law requires registered sex offenders to keep a certain distance from schools, member Charles Kucinski said

Franklin Reformed Church’s Rev. Jill Fenske told the board that churches open their doors to NA and AA out of hospitality, and there’s never been a problem before. Recent public opinion has “spun out of control,” she said. She voiced support for the peer-based groups, which are held all around town.

Florida AA Member Arrested For Attempted Child Kidnapping

Gainsville Florida-Aniball Baris arrested at Florida AA meeting for attempted child kidnapping of a 3 year old child ! Baris was located in a Florida Church attending an AA meeting when arrested.Churches need to consider the safety of their congregation when renting space to 12 step programs.

How can the judicial system continue to mandate sexual predators to AA when they know minors attend meetings and other vulnerable members of society.

Why does both NA Daytona, AA Daytona and their parent Organization think it is okay to encourage minors of any age to attend their meetings? It unethical and shows total disregard for the safety of their members.
