AA Member Recounts Killing Her Husband She Met at an AA Meeting

Joanna Madonna recounted for jurors on Wednesday her recollection of the night she told her husband she wanted out of their marriage – and the gunshots and knife fight that followed. AA Daytona and AA Daytona have mandated violent felons at meetings!

In a clear, strong voice, she testified in her defense on the seventh day of the trial in Wake County Superior Court over accusations that she murdered her husband.

Madonna, 48, is charged with plotting the violent death of Jose Perez on Father’s Day weekend in June 2013. Violent criminals attend AA and NA Daytona Beach meetings.

The former Wake County teacher provided jurors with a daylong account of her life until Father’s Day on June 16, 2013, when police came to her home on Schoolhouse Street in Brier Creek neighborhood, investigating Perez’s death.

Perez, almost 18 years older than Madonna, was found dead in a ditch near Falls Lake by a passerby earlier that morning.

What led to Perez’s death has been the subject of competing narratives in a trial that has highlighted tribulations of people who bonded over substance abuse issues and their resolve to stay sober.

Prosecutors contend Madonna killed her husband shortly after starting a romantic relationship with her former therapist.

Quickly after settling into the witness box on Wednesday, Madonna admitted she had a hand in her husband’s death but said she did not plot to kill him.

Many relationships

Then over the next several hours, Madonna took the jurors on a quick journey through her life, talking about her struggles as a teen, leaving her parents’ house and living on the streets, where she abused drugs and alcohol, and suffered from sexual assaults.

Then Madonna described relationships with the three men with whom she had daughters. She talked about falling in love, developing relationships and marriages that didn’t last.

Madonna described her three daughters and a series of jobs she has had over the years. She was a teacher in the Wake County public schools for a while, but quit several months before her husband’s death because her youngest daughter was having trouble in school.

In 2009, Madonna married Perez, a man she met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and befriended while still married to a different husband.

That husband, the father of her youngest child, testified at the trial that Perez moved in with Madonna almost a month after he moved out.

But Madonna offered a different take on that on Wednesday.

Perez, she said, moved into her home first as a platonic friend. She said he told her he had cancer and only a few months to live not long after they met.

Prosecutors have suggested that Madonna married Perez, in part, for the benefits that he received as a veteran. Though her daughters received benefits for their education from Perez, she said her family had not relied on him financially.

Madonna said she started to suspect in 2013 that Perez was having an affair with a woman in Florida, and saved a Facebook exchange from his page that was presented in court on Wednesday.

Madonna also said she found bottles of rum in the garage on two occasions that led her to believe that Perez had started drinking again.

As a recovering alcoholic and drug abuser, Madonna said she could not live with a husband who was drinking, lying to her and cheating on her.

Madonna said she told Perez on several occasions during their marriage that she wanted out of the relationship. Whenever she did that, she said, Perez was able to talk her out of it by telling her that his life was not worth continuing without her in it.

By Father’s Day weekend in 2013, Madonna said she had told many she was leaving Perez, including her father and sponsors and friends from AA.

She decided to tell him on a Saturday afternoon after she had visited her former brother-in-law and his teenage son, who was dying from a rare bone cancer.

During that visit, Madonna got a handgun and knife from the teenager, an avid weapons collector.

Perez, according to autopsy reports, had been shot and repeatedly stabbed before his death.

Life-ending drive

Madonna said she planned to take Perez on a drive, end the relationship and drop him off at his sponsor’s home off N.C. 98.

Madonna, with little emotion in her voice, described stopping at a Sheetz gas station not far from their home before that conversation unfolded, then going with Perez to a Family Dollar store where she bought nail polish for a jewelry project she was making and a candle lighter.

After that stop, Madonna said her husband became more and more agitated about her wanting to end their marriage.

She said she told him she knew he was drinking and cheating on her.

She recounted him responding: “Jo, I can’t live without you. Jo, I love you, you’re my whole world. I’ll kill myself if you’re not here.”

Madonna said she was driving because Perez had left home without his wallet. She said she left her cell phone at home, charging in the bedroom, and he told her he did not have his phone, though she later said she remembered seeing it in the car and retrieved it later to text his friends.

Madonna said she pulled over twice during that ride.

The first time, Madonna recounted pulling into a church lot. He was yelling at her in English and Spanish, using profanity and clutching his chest.

“He’s getting more and more agitated,” Madonna recounted. “He starts getting loud and he starts looking like he’s panicking and he starts clutching his chest, saying ‘I’m going to have a heart attack. I’m going to have a heart attack.’”

In the church lot, Madonna said the two got out of the car. She moved from the driver’s side to the passenger side where he was.

“By the time I was coming around the back of the car I heard a gunshot and I looked up and he was pointing the gun at me,” Madonna recounted. “I was in shock. I just stood there and he started pointing the gun at himself.”

She pointed to just under her chin to demonstrate for the court just where he pointed the gun’s barrel. Madonna said she lunged at him and the gun went off.

Perez, according to the medical examiner report, suffered a wound in his jaw area that shattered his dentures.

Deonte’ Thomas, one of two Wake County public defender’s representing Madonna, asked, “and he shot at you?”

“He fired a shot at me, yep,” Madonna said in matter-of-fact tone.

Perez was bleeding from the wound in his cheek. He initially told her he was going to walk to the hospital, she recounted.

Madonna said she got Perez back in the car, strapped him into the passenger seat and began driving toward WakeMed, the nearest hospital.

But Perez, she said, told her he did not want to go to the hospital and said if he had to go he wanted to go to the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital, where he would not get charged as much for a visit.

Thomas asked Madonna why she didn’t just call emergency dispatchers. She explained that she had left her phone at home, charging in the bedroom, and that Perez told her he did not have his with him.

As they drove, Madonna said she was blaming herself for what she thought was a suicide attempt by Perez.

“I’m thinking it’s my fault that he was upset,” Madonna said. “I had expected that he might kill himself.”

Their drive toward the VA in Durham took another unexpected turn, Madonna said, when Perez again began clutching his chest. She pulled over again.

At that stop, not far from where his body was found, Madonna said Perez knocked her in the chest and she ended up on the ground with him on top of her and his arm across her. She said she struggled to breathe and thought she was going to die. Her arm was cut, she said, but she could not recall how.

Then, without remembering which arm she used, Madonna said she saw a knife glimmer within her reach and she grabbed it and began swinging it.

“I thought I was going to be dying right there,” Madonna said. “I just started swinging at him and I kept swinging at him until I felt he wasn’t holding me down any more.”

Madonna said she got up, ran toward the car, then saw Perez out of the corner of her eye push up off the ground as if he were going to get up. She said she rushed back toward him, took off his shoes, threw them away and tossed the knife into the woods.

She said in her mind, she thought he was going to get up and go to his sponsor’s on his own.

“I didn’t realize how many times I had stabbed him,” she said. “I was completely in like a frenzy, an adrenaline thing.”

Madonna, once home, quickly made phone calls to her middle daughter and then tried to enlist her help in cleaning the blood out of the front of the jeep. The daughter refused to help her.

Madonna said she did not call police or emergency dispatchers because she thought Perez was going to get up from the violence and go to his sponsor’s.

“I kept telling myself that,” she said.

But then she also got his phone out of the car and texted people to tell them he was going to Florida, where he used to live. “I didn’t want people to worry,” she said.

Madonna also texted the former therapist many times on that Saturday and Sunday, and, after going to Mass on Sunday, went to visit her romantic interest.

Madonna acknowledged to her defense attorney that her visiting her former therapist might “look like she was cheating on her husband.”

“You were, in fact, cheating on him,” Thomas said. Madonna responded that she was.

But Madonna said at the end, shortly before prosecutors began their cross-examination of her, that she did not intend to kill her husband and did not know he was fatally wounded when she left him on the side of the road, near Falls Lake that Saturday.

West Ashley man sentenced to 25 years in girlfriend’s strangling death

Christina Elmore Email @celmorepc

A judge on Tuesday sentenced a West Ashley man to 25 years in prison for strangling a woman to death in a domestic dispute.

Charleston police had charged David Mark Reagan, 57, with murder and first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the death of his girlfriend, 52-year-old Kathy Hawkins. Dangerous people attending NA Daytona and AA Daytona Meetings.

Reagan pleaded guilty in a Charleston County court to a lesser voluntary manslaughter charge. His sentence was set as part of a negotiated plea agreement that also saw prosecutors drop the sexual assault charge against him.

Hawkins’ body was found lying on the living room floor of her home at The Palms apartments on Aug. 20, 2013. The complex is located off of Orange Grove Road.

Surveillance images showed Reagan using the woman’s credit card to buy beer and liquor after her death, 9th Circuit Chief Deputy Solicitor Bruce DuRant said during the man’s plea hearing. Daytona Narcotics Anonymous and Daytona Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Luke Malloy, an attorney for Reagan, said the man suffered from bipolar disorder and alcoholism. Both conditions contributed to the violence committed by Reagan, who, when sober, was often viewed by others as “an amazing man.”

The couple met in Alcoholics Anonymous, with Reagan referring to Hawkins as “the love of his life,” Malloy said. Beware of NA Daytona and AA Daytona Meetings!

“The two shared a common vice. At times they helped each other with those problems, and at times they fueled the fire,” Malloy said.

A string of domestic violence arrests preceded Reagan’s killing of Hawkins.

He was jailed in September 2006 after he punched, kicked and kneed a live-in girlfriend, sending her to the hospital with bruises and three broken ribs, according to an arrest affidavit. He was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature but later pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Reagan was arrested in another domestic incident in January 2010, accused of biting a new live-in girlfriend on the head and hand and tearing out a clump of her hair, court documents show.

Reagan was sentenced to 30 days in jail in connection with that incident.

He was charged with domestic violence again in October of that year for pinning Hawkins to a bed while drunk, pummeling her face and body, and throwing her into two walls when she tried to escape, an arrest affidavit and police reports stated.

Reagan must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, 21¼ years.

“The grim reality is that with his age, this could be a life sentence,” Malloy said, adding that Reagan hopes to outlive it.

Turning to face Hawkins’ loved ones, Reagan apologized for taking her life.

“Every day I think about Kathy. … If I could swap places with her I would,” Reagan said. “There’s no doubt.”

Edwards Hawkins III, Hawkins’ ex-husband, told the judge that the woman was killed on their daughter’s 10th birthday.

“Not a day goes by that my daughter doesn’t ask the question why this happened,” Hawkins said.

Prosecutors: East Cleveland woman, 59, strangled by estranged husband

on January 23, 2014

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio— Authorities said on Thursday that a 59-year-old woman was strangled inside her apartment and prosecutors have charged her estranged husband in connection with her death.

Kenneth Booker, 54, was charged Thursday with aggravated murder in East Cleveland Municipal Court. Judge William L. Dawson set bond at $1 million and his case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury to decide how the case will proceed.

Prosecutors on Thursday said Booker is accused of strangling to death Carolyn Blair, 59, of East Cleveland  inside her apartment. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not yet officially ruled on the death.

East Cleveland Prosecutor Willa Hemmons said in court and in an interview with the Northeast Ohio Media Group that she observed Booker and Blair walking out of the Cuyahoga County Justice Center about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, some four hours before Blair was found dead.

Hemmons said Booker loudly cursed at Blair from the time they left the justice center to Tower City.

“They were right in front of me and I heard him yelling at her,” Hemmons said. “So I lagged behind to make sure nothing happened. I was kind of afraid something might.”

Hemmons said she overheard Booker telling a relative he was planning to visit the relative’s home later in the day, which is where police eventually arrested Booker on suspicion of murder.

Booker, according to detectives, Hemmons and a search of court records, has been convicted of domestic violence five times since 1989.

He was convicted of domestic violence against Blair twice, once in 2001 and once in 2013.

Booker pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony domestic violence in the 2013 case was sentenced to two years probation.

Police records say Booker was arrested March 22, 2013 after Booker threatened to shoot her with a .22-caliber handgun, which reports say they confiscated after the arrest.

Booker on Nov. 22 completed the county’s treatment program and was ordered that he attend Alcoholic Anonymous meetings three times per week.

Murdered Karla Mendez Brada’s Family State in Lawsuit that AA Meetings Directs Financial, Sexual and Violent Predators to Victims

Slain woman’s family alleges AA meetings point ‘financial, sexual, and violent predators’ to victims

Posted Jun 27, 2013 12:50 PM CDT   NA Daytona Area Meetings and AA Daytona Area Meetings times.
By Martha Neil

It’s no secret that Alcoholics Anonymous attracts troubled individuals–and has helped many turn their lives around.

But the nonprofit organization known for its 12-step program also attracts some who find it a convenient place to meet targets for a so-called “13th step”–exploiting troubled women sexually and financially, claims a California lawsuit. The suit was filed by the parents of a woman who was allegedly killed by a fellow participant, Eric Allen Earle. His ex-wife and others close to him said he repeatedly relapsed and became violent when drinking, and court records show he had been the subject of six restraining orders.

Hector and Jaroslava Mendez’s daughter, Karla Brada Mendez, 31, was unaware of Earle’s criminal background–or that he had been ordered by a court to attend AA meetings in the San Fernando Valley area–when she became involved with the 40-year-old sometime-electrician in 2011 after meeting him at AA, according to a lengthy Pro Publica article.

However, those who know Earle said he repeatedly used AA to find women who could provide him with housing, turning on the charm at the outset of their relationship, while continuing to drink. Then, as Karla reportedly found out too late, less positive aspects of his personality emerged. Continue reading

Julia Franzen Covered In Blood Arrested For Stabbing Her AA Member Mother Nancy Franzen

AA member Nancy Franzen’s daughter Julia Franzen has been arrested in her murder. Julia Franzen had a history of arrests and mental problems. This is such a tragic story. Even though I do not know if Julia Franzen was mandated to AA for her arrests, I do know that her Mother was very involved in Alcoholics Anonymous. After reading this story I could not help but wonder what led up to this? True the daughter was very troubled indeed. Did her Mom being an AA member impact this very volatile situation in a positive or negative way? AA is known for telling people not to take their meds, and look poorly on the professional mental health community. They also are known for encouraging people to look at their part in it, and going through confessions.

Did the fact that Nancy Franzen was an AA member help or hurt her and her family in the end? R.I.P. Nancy Franzer.

Another Woman Murdered By Man She Met at an AA Meeting

AA Member Corey Dean Thomas and multi convicted violent felon murdered a woman after meeting her at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. This man was court mandated to attend AA meetings and on probation at the time he strangled and stuffed her body into a crawl space at her apartment. This is similar to the Karla Brada murder by a man she also met at an AA meeting. Karla Brada’s parents are suing Alcoholics Anonymous World Services.

Thomas had four violent felonies to his name when mandated to AA meetings!

He was released from prison in June. He pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court in 2009 to two counts of second-degree assault. According to those charges: Thomas had been drinking and argued with his then-girlfriend, who was trying to break up with him. He punched her in the head and body a few times and pushed her to the floor.

The girlfriend’s stepfather tried to pull Thomas away. Thomas pulled a box cutter and cut the man and the girlfriend on their heads, the complaint said.

Thomas threatened to murder everyone in the house and chased a 14-year-old with the box cutter, court documents show. He later told police that although he had no memory of committing the acts, voices in his head told him to do it.

This is the demographic that attend AA, yet they are campaigning teens to go to the same meetings with no one in charge, or professionally trained.  In fact many Teen Drug Courts are mandating minors to attend as well. When is this madness going to end?

12 Stepper Employed At Project 90 Rehab Found Guilty Of Murder

The retrial of Mohammed Haroon Ali found him guily of first degree murder. He was once known for his sponsoring of young people when he worked at Project 90 San Mateo CA, a 12 step based facility. Biletnikoff re-trial: killer takes stand
By John Servatius

Already in prison for first-degree murder and a 64 year-to-life sentence, former CSM student Mohammed Haroon Ali took the witness stand Feb. 29 in a bid for a voluntary manslaughter conviction and time served. This comes during his second trial in the strangling death of Tracey Biletnikoff on Feb. 15, 1999. She was the daughter of Fred Biletnikoff, the Oakland Raiders’ wide-receiver and Hall-of-Famer.
In 2009, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco overturned Ali’s conviction, citing racial discrimination as the reason that at least one African-American was left off the jury. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the appellate decision in 2010. Ali’s retrial began Jan. 25 in Redwood City.

snip

The buzz around Friendship Hall, the P-90 facility in downtown San Mateo that Monday evening was that Ali had relapsed, and that he wanted Biletnikoff’s car keys.

The witnesses were recovering substance abusers waiting for a Narcotics Anonymous meeting to begin. Jean San Genito-Martin, R.N. and Paula Panizzi, a contract manager with county alcohol and drug recovery services, testified that many of those present outside the building were against Biletnikoff giving Ali the keys. Biletnikoff was also in the crowd.

Ali was in his office in the back of the facility playing computer games. Biletnikoff went to see him at the urging of Paul Galindo. At one point, according to witnesses, she was sitting on Ali’s lap, consoling him.
According to detectives and the defendant’s own statements, Ali grabbed Biletnikoff’s keys out of her hands when she wouldn’t give them up or give him a ride to relatives.

She was standing in front of the office door, which was closed, blocking the defendant’s escape. He put his hands on her shoulders “to move her,” he said, because of the difficulty in getting past her. She slapped him several times, calling him various expletives and a loser. His hands went from her shoulders to her neck.
After that, the defendant said, he drew a blank.

March 20, 2004, Largo — A 38-year-old woman was arrested Friday in the death of her 62-year-old fiance, a little more than a year after he was stabbed in the apartment they shared.

Antoinette Abidin was arrested on a charge of first- degree murder. She was being held without bail at the Pinellas County jail.

Abidin had told police that someone else killed Kenneth McElhiney during what she described as a sexual fantasy night at their apartment at 2750 E. Bay Drive, according to court documents released Friday. Investigators say they found evidence to the contrary.

According to the documents, investigators discovered another man and woman had been in the apartment the night of March 8, 2003, and the woman was there as a blind date for Abidin. The male guest told detectives that the two women “did not hit it off,” the court records state.

The man also said he, the female guest and Abidin had been drinking beer, smoking marijuana and smoking cocaine that night. Before he left, he heard Abidin and McElhiney arguing about money for cocaine, he told investigators.

The guests did not have blood on their clothes when investigators found them, shortly after the killing was reported; Abidin had blood on her hands, the records state.

A knife with blood on it was found beneath a chair while investigators were executing a search warrant, which they had to obtain because Abidin refused to allow them in without one, the records state. No fingerprints were found on the knife.

After the party, in the early- morning hours of March 9, 2003, Abidin repeatedly called her Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, but the sponsor told investigators Abidin was drunk and difficult to understand. The sponsor unplugged her telephone to get some sleep, but Abidin kept calling, the court records state.

One message left on the sponsor’s answering machine, at 4:04 a.m., said: “This is not a joke. Get someone over here,” the records state.

At 4:30 AM, Abidin called her mother and said McElhiney had been stabbed 20 times, the records state.

When asked why she took so long to contact authorities, Abidin said her phone broke after she made those calls, court records show.

Largo woman sentenced in fiancé’s murder
LARGO – Antoinette Abidin, 40, of Largo, pleaded guilty Oct. 11 to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Abidin pleaded guilty as part of a plea bargain with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office, which reduced the charge against her from first-degree murder in the 2003 stabbing of her fiancé, Kenneth McElhiney, 62.

The man’s body was discovered in his East Bay Drive condominium. He died of repeated stab wounds. Reports said Abidin had dried blood on her hands and was connected to the murder weapon, an 8-inch kitchen knife found in the apartment.

Alcoholics Anonymous Member Beat Sponsor To Death With a Baseball Bat

A court mandated mentally ill felon has murdered his sponsor in a horrific violent act using a baseball bat. Leslie Haun was considered to be schizophrenic among having other serious mental health issues. The courts will send any level of criminal to AA/NA meetings, regardless of the dangers it imposes on other members. But it is free to the courts, and it keeps AA growing with lots of Big Books to sell to the newly released prisoners. AA solicits the courts as well as the prisoners to attend these felon filled AA meetings.

COVINGTON – Shain Pierce returned to his apartment after having a toe amputated and found the man he was sponsoring in Alcoholics Anonymous drinking alcohol inside.

When Pierce tried to kick Leslie Haun and his son Robert Haun out of the Scott Street apartment, the elder Haun beat him with an aluminum baseball bat and table leg until he died, a Covington Detective testified Tuesday in Kenton District Court.

Leslie Haun, 47, who has long history of mental problems and a lengthy criminal record, is charged with murder. His son, 19, is charged with complicity to murder and tampering with evidence.

Pierce’s body was found Sept. 20 inside the first floor apartment, said Det. Mike Thompson. The upstairs neighbors told police that they heard a loud fight the night before.

When police interviewed the father and son, Robert Haun told police that his father beat Pierce and then ordered him to throw the bat and table leg used in the beating down the sewer, Thompson said. Police were able to find the bat but could not find the leg, he said.

Pierce, 54, often took in people that needed help, said his sister Tammy Callen.
“He took in I don’t know how many people,” she said. “He was well loved and well respected.”
