LPD Sgt. J.R. Helms said he met with the man at Comanche County Memorial Hospital where the man was being treated for a cut right eye/cheek and left side of the head as well as a possible broken arm. The man told Helms he’d been drinking with a group of people behind the AA building at Southwest 12th and F Avenue around noon when he’s said a racial epithet. Single Ottawa mom could face jail time for Narcotics Anonymous ‘grandparents scheme’

By Chloé Fedio, OTTAWA CITIZEN June 14, 2013
OTTAWA — A judge told a single mother he was “very reluctant” to send her to jail for her role in a “grandparents scheme” that defrauded seniors in Canada and the United States out of $45,000.

But Carolyn Palmer must prove that she is making real efforts to pay that money back before he will rule it out.

“I need to see some action,” Ontario Justice Robert Fournier said Friday afternoon.

Palmer was depressed that she could not afford Christmas for her young son when she was approached by another member of Narcotics Anonymous to take part in a mass marketing fraud, her lawyer argued at her sentencing hearing. Continue reading

Violent Woman Convicted Three Times for Stabbing Partner Attends Narcotics Anonymous Meetings

This very violent woman attends both AA meetings and NA meetings after being charged with stabbing her partner on 3 different occasions. So many violent criminals go to AA meetings before they are sentenced in hopes to impress the judge. Many defense attorneys tell their clients to do this no matter how violent the crime.

A woman convicted for the third time of stabbing her male partner is spending her time in rehab, but not jail.

Lena Walkus, 38, appeared in Campbell River provincial court on May 29, to be sentenced for assault causing bodily harm.

According to Crown prosecutor Adrienne Venturini, it’s the third time Walkus has been convicted in connection with a domestic stabbing assault.

Venturini asked the court to impose nine more months of jail time, but instead, Judge Roderick Sutton delayed sentencing a few days to allow Walkus to immediately enter residential treatment in Alert Bay.According to defence lawyer Angie Penhall, Walkus grew up in Vancouver and began drinking at age 12 or 13. At 15, she began smoking marijuana and by 17 she was using crack cocaine. Continue reading

The woman who helped her lover confine and brutally torture her own husband for 2½ months in a Toronto apartment was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday.

“This is the worst case of abuse and torture seen in Canada,” said Justice John McMahon, adding the “almost unspeakable” acts performed showed “a human nature of such depravity it is beyond conscience.”

The 32-year-old woman, who cannot be named to due a publication ban that protects her husband, pleaded guilty in January 2012 to aggravated assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life.

She watched her lover and the father of her child, John Michael Siscoe, beat her husband with a broom handle until it broke, cut him with razor blades and pour lighter fluid — or sometimes hairspray or aftershave — over parts of his body and set it alight, according to the agreed statement of facts. Loophole In California Law Lets Sex Offenders Become Addiction Counselors

California state capitol

Now this is some excellent investigative reporting. Hats off to the reporters! Now this probably won’t come as a shock to those of us advocating safety regulations in 12 step meetings.  I wonder what the state of California has to say about the fact that sexual predators are allowed to be AA sponsors and NA sponsors for people of all ages, including teens?
Many 12 steppers go on to become addiction counselors to make a living, or set up halfway houses to make a buck and exploit the system and the addicts. This is just outrageous that sex offenders can be addiction counselors or AA Sponsors to teens. Let’s roll up our sleeves and start raising more hell about these loopholes and apathy that allow these insane practices to continue! Stop sexual abuse by sexual psychopaths turned counselors and sex predators turned sponsors!
Hole in California law allows sex offenders to become addiction counselors
May 13, 2013
“Sexual psychopath.” That was the diagnosis a court-ordered psychiatrist gave Donald Robert Hoffman after he was convicted of molesting a 13-year-old boy in 1965. Hoffman, the psychiatrist determined, was a danger to others.

But that history didn’t stop Hoffman from becoming a state-registered drug and alcohol counselor decades later, even though he had to register as a sex offender once he was released from prison in 1979.

Hoffman lost his counselor status only after three residents of the San Francisco rehab center where he worked told investigators in 2008 that Hoffman had plied them with drugs and alcohol and made aggressive sexual advances. Hoffman was fired, but was never charged over those allegations. He died two years later at 67. Continue reading

We Can Do So Much Better Than 12 Steps

Many agree with this letter to the editor!

We can do better than 12 steps

Letter to the editor

Our number one problem (health and otherwise) in Humboldt County is drugs? We treat our alcohol and drug problems with an 85-year-old prescription. I am talking to you, doctors. If your doctor treated your cancer the same way doctors did 85 years ago, you might get a new doctor. The emotional claims that 12-step programs work are over-blown and largely unrealized. It matters if Alcoholics Anonymous works or not. After all, we send our family members to 12-step programs in order for them to get help. We send criminals to 12-step programs for them to get God, stop crime, and clean up our cities. But 12-step programs do not work for most people, so, let’s quit wasting everyone’s money and time on the 12-step movement.

And the anti-progress aspect of the 12-step systems? Their language is archaic. Their practices are almost medieval. They are very much a sexist organization in their language, at least.

”Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.” Our kids deserve better!

Let’s find a better way. NADaytona
