Man admits selling drugs after Narcotics Anonymous meetings

SEATTLE (AP) – A man who hosted support meetings for drug and alcohol addicts has pleaded guilty to a federal drug conspiracy charge, after admitting he was selling morphine, oxycodone and other drugs before and after the meetings.

Michael Martin Shepard was arrested in March. The 65-year-old ran the Nomadian Community Resource Center in South Seattle and hosted Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings there.

According to a plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court on Friday, Shepard insisted that customers become members of the resource center before he would sell to them. Authorities who executed a search warrant at the resource center, where Shepard also lived, found two guns.

Shepard faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in January.

Tory Bryant is considered mentally ill and plead guilty for assault and battery for hitting his daughter. In a plea deal they dropped 3 attempted murder charges when he set the house on fire with his mother, daughter and other child were inside. The judge mandated Tory Bryant to AA or NA meetings, anger management and a psychological evaluation!

Tory Bryant’s mother Rosalyn Bryant asked Judge Tina S. Page in Hampden Superior Court on Tuesday to find a way to get him help he needs.

Rosalyn Bryant said her son would never have set her house on fire – with her, his 5-year-old daughter, and another 7-year-old inside – if he hadn’t been drunk and high on drugs.

Page said since she was appointed to the bench 15 years ago, she has repeatedly talked about the need for a secure facility to which she could sentence people with mental-health issues such as the 24-year-old Bryant.

But since there is no such facility, Page imposed a 2 1/2- to four-year sentence to state prison. Tory Bryan pleaded guilty to charges, admitting he set the fire at the family home.

Assistant District Attorney Clarissa A. Wright showed Page photos of the Rosewell Street house, which had about $40,000 in damage as a result of the fire. Bryant’s mother, daughter and the other girl got out safely after the alarm sounded, and they saw smoke, according to the prosecutor. Continue reading →

Man stole from elderly, avoids prison sentence but must repay money

A Norwalk man who stole $11,000 from an 78-year-old man he met at Alcoholics Anonymous received a suspended prison sentence, but was ordered to repay the money, according to Ottawa County court records
Timothy Gilbert, 42, was charged after bank employees called police in December 2011 when they noticed the elderly man making unusual withdrawals from his bank account.

Gilbert had fed the man a story about needing $11,000 to get his father’s inheritance, and the victim agreed to lend him the money, according to police reports.

Gilbert was eventually charged with theft from the elderly. He was sentenced Thursday to more than three years in prison on the theft case and a 2011 theft case.

The prison time was suspended, and Gilbert was instead placed on three years probation and ordered to repay the $11,000, according to court records. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service. NA Daytona Beach Area Schedule.

NA Meetings Disrupts California Chico State University Student Neighborhood by Harassing Young Women

Here is another neighborhood having problems with NA Meetings. We can sure relate to this in our parks in Holly Hill Florida Volusia County. We have both AA and NA meetings with a long history of violating park rules and threatening and harassing citizens. I hope these Chico students can get some relief.

The landlords and parents of Chico State students who reside near the intersection of Cherry and Sixth streets are a bit up in arms these days over a new neighbor who’s moved into the building that for years housed Ed’s Printing.

The new neighbor is technically the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, a local church that hosts Narcotics Anonymous meetings in the building. The meetings began in May. The building, located at 550 Cherry St., is owned by the “Gordon G. Living Grier Trust.”

The concerns voiced by the landlords and parents are directed at the people who come to the 17 weekly NA meetings, stand outside the building and smoke cigarettes, and, according to some, spread needles on the sidewalks. They also allegedly go through trash receptacles and make unsavory remarks to the young women who live nearby or walk past on their way to school. Robert Combs is the parent of a student currently attending Chico State. He says his daughter and roommate had to move out of a nearby house because of the presence of attendees at the NA meetings. Combs is a Chico State graduate and is president of the school’s Parent Advisory Council.

In an email titled “Has Chico Lost its Sense of Place?” Combs writes that his daughter “was very concerned to see those seeking counseling were loitering outside the facility prior to meetings, smoking, going through the students’ garbage and making lewd comments to our young adults, many of whom are on their own for the first time.” Continue reading →

Dangerous and Religious AA Meetings Should Not Be The Only Option for Drug Addiction or Alcoholics

The news is finally getting out that this country needs better options than Alcoholics Anonymous or other 12 step programs for drug and alcohol addiction. AA is losing control over preventing anything negative being printed about them in the media. Thanks Chelsea Carmona for writing this excellent piece! AA has been an abysmal failure and the cause of many rapes, deaths and suicides.

Alcoholics Need More Options than AA

It’s no surprise that faith-based programs are particularly ill-suited to atheists and agnostics

Should atheists be forced to participate in faith-based recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)? The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recently said no, unanimously siding with drug offender Barry A. Hazle Jr. after state officials mandated his participation in AA. Court documents state that Hazle’s requests for a secular alternative were repeatedly denied by both his parole officer and representatives from the state-contracted mental health service provider, West Care. For violating his parole, Hazle was arrested and incarcerated for over 100 additional days. NA Daytona Meetings in Daytona.

The appeals court ordered a Sacramento district judge to consider preventing state officials from requiring 12-step treatment as a part of the parole program. But it’s going to be difficult, because this one-size-fits-all prescription – 12-step meetings and 12-step-based group therapy for everyone – reigns supreme in treatment today. Nearly eight out of ten private programs use 12-step recovery, with two-thirds compelling patients to attend meetings, according to researchers working on the University of Georgia’s National Treatment Center Study and cited in Inside Rehab by Anne Fletcher. Public programs, frequently starved for funding, aren’t much better. In fact, West Care, California’s sole drug treatment provider, only contracts with religious-based treatment programs.

But even if they’re rarely acknowledged in today’s treatment community, there are many alternatives to 12-step fellowships such as SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Specifically For Women. This is important because a national survey published in 2007 concluded that an addicted person was just as likely to stay sober whether they were involved in AA or another support group. In fact, it would behoove treatment providers to match people with a support system that’s suitable to their preferences, because group participation is associated with increased abstinence. Daytona Beach NA Meeting The Third Tradition Continues to Smoke in Centennial Park Holly Hill

A typical Saturday night at Centennial Park in Holly Hill Florida with NA Daytona members meeting for a 12 step meeting called  “The Third Tradition”. They continue to smoke almost a year after the No Smoking Rules have gone into effect. What message does this send to the children they bring to the meetings when they see their parents totally ignoring City park rules? Daytona NA members sit right under the no smoking sign on the pavilion and just next to the large sign stating No Smoking. Plus they are parking on the grass and double parking with cars and motorcycles. What makes them think they are so special that they do not have to follow park rules? NA and AA Daytona Meetings in Holly Hill.

AA Grapevine talking about AA member stalking a 13 Year old Girl at an AA meeting in the AA Grapevine September 2013 edition entitled “Keeping AA Safe” and the story called “Unacceptable.” Very sick puppies, you don’t expect the AA members recruited from jails and prisons to protect 13 year old girls you prevent them from stepping foot in the rooms first. Too little, too late, they have been covering this stuff up for 78 years….

Man Sentenced in Hatchet Assault on Girlfriend Mandated to Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings

As part of his plea,Joseph McCoy Burr III  was ordered to attend anger management classes and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. This is an extremely dangerous man. Man pleads guilty to hatchet assault

A Villa Rica man was sentenced to 13 years in prison Monday following multiple alleged assaults of his live-in girlfriend, including one in which he was accused of wielding a hatchet at her.

Joseph McCoy Burr III, 41, was originally charged with 14 counts, including charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and battery. The man was sentenced by Judge Bill Hamrick to 13 years in prison, to be followed by 17 years of probation, in Carroll County Superior Court on Monday.

Burr was arrested in March 2012 following an allegation that he had assaulted a woman who lived with him on Bonnie Sue Drive, breaking five ribs. The two alleged incidents occurred in February and March of that year.

Burr apologized in open court Monday, though the female victim was not present.

“I was wrong, and I’m very sorry,” he said, crying. “I never meant for that to happen, and I want to thank the judge for not giving me a bond when I was before him a few months ago. Sitting in that jail cell for 21 hours a day has helped me.”

In the February incident, Burr allegedly wielded a hatchet at the victim, striking her on the hand and ankle when she tried to deflect the weapon. The defendant then hit the woman with a drinking glass and used the cord of a heating pad to choke her, police said.

Also in that February incident, Burr allegedly poured hot candle wax on the female while she was in the bathtub, cleaning her wounds. Daytona Beach Area Meetings.

In the March incident noted in the indictment, shortly after which Burr was arrested, the defendant allegedly hit the woman with a belt buckle and then plunged her head underwater while she was in the bath, holding it there until she was able to pull the drain stopper to let the tub’s water out so she could breathe. Former Kinston City councilman sentenced to 78 months

William “Will” Walter Barker on Thursday was sentenced to 6 ½ years federal imprisonment after pleading guilty to a felony count of receipt of child pornography.

WILMINGTON – Less than nine months ago, William “Will” Walter Barker was one of Kinston ’s political and civic leaders. Today, he’s headed to federal prison.

Thursday, in federal court in Wilmington , the 44-year-old — wearing shackles and an orange jumpsuit with Brunswick County Jail stenciled on the back — learned his fate after pleading guilty to a child pornography charge.

Barker was sentenced to 6 ½ years in prison, issued a $10,000 fine and a lifetime of supervised release when he is eventually released from prison on a felony count of receipt of child pornography, to which Barker plead guilty in June.
