The man accused of killing Charles Middleton at his south Charlotte home Saturday morning was a man he’d sponsored while involved in a Narcotics Anonymous program years ago, people close to the situation say.
The disclosure has heightened fears about the potential dangers of sponsorship relationships among recovering addicts in the Charlotte area.
On Monday, Christopher Paul Huffman was taken into custody in Casa Grande, Ariz., more than 2,000 miles from the scene of the shooting on Elmhurst Road in the Sedgefield neighborhood adjacent to Dilworth.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg homicide detectives traveled to Arizona on Monday to interview Huffman, who had no criminal record. Police have not divulged a possible motive in the killing or said whether Middleton’s sponsorship work with Huffman made him a target.
But for people involved in 12-step programs, the link spurred wariness and fear.
“It is almost a sacred thing. These are people who so freely give of themselves,” said a Narcotics Anonymous member who declined to give his name because the association frowns on speaking to the press. “How do they know that the people who we are trying to help are not going to do us harm?”

Karla Brada Strangled to Death by AA Member Eric Allen Earle Says Lawsuit Filed Against Alcoholics Anonymous

Parent’s Worse Nightmare – Domestic Violence, Anonymity, Death of Your Child – The Story of Karla Brada
One such story is that of Jaroslava and Hector Mendez and family. The Mendez’s live in a beautiful ranch style home in Santa Clarita, California, filled with memorabilia from their past, a very homey feel, pictures and treasures adorning the living room and, of course, pictures of their three daughters. Their eldest, their youngest, and their middle child Karla, who died at 31 years old, on August 31, 2011. Karla was a beautiful young woman who was a diabetes supplies medical tech, a great softball player, and loved her dog Kloe, as a mother loves a child. Karla was just getting started in life. At 31, she was dating and enjoying life, having fun and beginning to discover herself. She was also drinking alcohol and testing her limits, like most young people do. She had been charged with a DUI (driving under the influence) after a car accident. She was reportedly driving with a bac (blood alcohol level) of .08. Fortunately, she was not injured, nor had she injured others. She attended inpatient rehab and was taken in a van, with all the other patients, to AA meetings. Jaroslava and Hector wanted their baby Karla to get the help she needed and were happy to see her getting some help.
Soon after becoming a member of AA, Karla met a man there and bought a condo in which the two were living together. His name is Eric Allen Earle, and he was mandated by the courts to attend AA meetings as a condition of his parole. Eric Earle’s criminal record looks like something from a CSI TV show. It is truly terrifying the number of restraining orders that have been filed against Earle, by his ex-wife and his own father. Earle allegedly murdered Karla by strangulation after she had asked him to move out of her condo. A few weeks before her death, Earle was arrested for battery after beating Karla. Earle’s AA sponsor, Patrick Fry, allegedly talked Karla out of pressing charges, and the charges were dropped. Since 1991, Eric Earle has been charged and convicted of 22 civil cases, has 8 restraining orders filed against him and has accumulated more than 52 criminal charges. It might seem strange that he did not spend more time in jail, but his record shows that he was put on probation, with AA attendance as a stipulation, an all-too-common mandate. Man Arrested For Shooting Up Neighbors Cabin Then Bonds Out and Goes To AA Meetings

AA Member David R. Willer 66, is found guilty of felony endangering safety by reckless use of a firearm. This after he fired into a neighbors cabin. Now this guy is crazy! You have got to read this article. The court did an evaluation on him saying he had a narcissistic personality disorder and characteristics of a sociopath. In jail he threatened to kill the jailers, the SWAT team that arrested him and stack them like a cord of wood. The SWAT team found 14 firearms at his house. He had previously threatened to kill his own wife and burn a house down.
After the arrest, he gets out on bond and goes to a 12 step Rehab at Resurrection Behavioral Health in Chicago. Then he goes to AA meetings! Yes! Just the kind of man you would want to hold hands with in AA, right?
AA Member Arrested While Attending AA Meeting at Church For Stealing Car
AA member Brian Michael Mulrooney, 23, was arrested for stealing a vehicle at an AA meeting being held in a church. This man resisted arrest and head butted a police officer. Churches need to be very careful about allowing AA meetings.
Church pastors need to review their Insurance policies to see if it covers the AA meetings, and also to require the AA and NA meetings to provide insurance to the church that includes Sexual Abuse Molestation Liability Insurance because the courts are mandating 3rd level sexual predators to AA meetings along with rapists. Is this really what they want for their church? It is quite possible that Brian Michael Mulrooney was court mandated as well.I wonder how many minors got to witness this violent arrest?

Man Charged With Pulling Handgun on Two Men Goes to AA Meetings is Given Light Sentence
AA Member Andrew Peterson got the AA get out of jail card by getting a 6 month suspended sentence after he attended AA meetings prior to sentencing. This is very common for attorneys to tell their clients to go to AA meetings because it will look good to the court. So even before the courts mandate 12 step meetings, attorneys nationwide are encouraging the criminals they represent to go to AA and NA Meetings.

Did They Really Tell Stalkers Going to AA Meetings and Ala-non Meetings is Helpful?
This is stalking awareness month. Stalking comes in many forms including online stalking. AA members are known for stalking anti-AA bloggers. Many cannot handle any criticism of the 12 steps, The Big Book or Bill W. Bloggers beware. But there is also many other forms of stalking and it can lead to death. I cannot believe this article below actually tells people that might think they are a stalker, to go to AA meetings and Al-anon meetings! I mean we already have the courts mandating stalkers to 12 step programs. So before you go to an AA or NA meeting, or a 12 step based co-dependency support group (CoDA) realize you could be sitting next to a stalker thanks to our courts and others who think it is a fine idea!
” It is a form of harassment and can lead to death. If you have stalking tendencies, there are things you can do to prevent yourself from being a stalker as well. The majority of them have an obsessive pattern which they lose control of. They become co-dependent upon the person, which means they believe they cannot exist without the other person. Going to a Co-Dependency group can help as can going to AA or Al-Anon. Stalkers usually self medicate with drugs and/or drinking as well.”
Sex Offender Arrested For Going To Church with Sunday School and Daycare on Premises
Sex offender arrested for attending church that had Daycare and Sunday School on the premises. How often does this happen across this country in all our churches with mandated sex predators attending NA meetings and AA meeting in the church basements? Does the Pastors of these churches even realize that AA is bringing sex predators and violent felons to their churches? Does their insurance policies cover ‘sexual molestation’ for the 12 step meetings? What about the AA’s groups insurance policy-is the church named in the policy? How much coverage is it, and does it cover abuse and molestation? Important questions churches need to be asking themselves. Not to mention they are allowing the pagan religion of AA to worship in Christian Churches.
AA Killer Dies In Prison That Was Serving Life Sentence For Bludgeoning Death Of Woman He Met In Alcoholics Anonymous
AA Member Louis Ephraim Wilson III who was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of Tracy Lynn Baldwin, that he met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. On December 19th 2012 he died in prison. Another woman murdered by a man she met at an AA meeting. How many rapes and murders by AA members do there have to be for somebody does something to put a stop to it?
ACLU FILES COMPLAINT AFTER JUDGE SENTENCED TEEN TO CHURCH FOR 10 YEARS
Judge Mike Norman sentenced a teen to 10 years of church. This is not the first time he has sentenced people to church. He does not seem to mind violating peoples constitutional rights. When is the ACLU going to file complaints about judges mandating Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous?
PARENTS BE CAREFUL LETTING YOUR TEEN ASSOCIATE WITH AA MEMBERS AND THE FELLOWSHIP OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
Why should parents be careful about letting their teens associate with AA members from the Santa Clarita Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous?

The Santa Clarita Valley (SVC) Central Office of Alcoholics Anonymous is located at 26951 Ruether Ave., Suite B-6, Santa Clarita, CA 91351 and acts as the central focal point of Alcoholics Anonymous claiming no control over the events they coordinate, promote and advertise in that area of Los Angeles County (http://www.aascv.org/). Alcoholics Anonymous actively recruits from jails and prison for members under their “Correction Committees”, from mental institutions under their “Hospital & Institution” (H&I) committees and from the probation, parole and court systems under their “Cooperation with the Professional Community” (CPC) committees. The members of AA will tell you that the majority of the members do not come from these outlets and through the last survey they published, which only polled around 7,000 members, only 11% of the members came from these outlets. Depending upon outside sources this number is actually between 45-55%.
Why should this be important information for parents to know if they allow their children to go to AA meetings, Al-Anon or Alateen in Santa Clarita Valley (SVC)? The simple reason is because this particular Intergroup co-mingles Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon and Alateen members and if a teen is attacked physically, financially or sexually they will be made to blame for the attack. Use Google and find the physical, financial or sexual attacks in Alcoholics Anonymous and you will find that the Victim is almost always made to be the reason for the attack and the AA Intergroup or group will be called blameless and they will blame your teen. You and your teen will be told repeatedly that your teen was at fault and that you can’t hold the people holding the event responsible for what happened. Here is an example that happens every year that co-mingles all three groups that happened this year, luckily without any incidents that are known and reported. Continue reading
