Woman who stabbed boyfriend with BBQ fork avoids prison, gets 90 days in jail

Victim who is ‘very lucky to be alive’ begs judge to keep ex-girlfriend out of prison.

A 27-year-old Wakeman woman was given jail time and ordered to pay her ex-boyfriend more than $18,000 in connection with stabbing him in the heart with a barbecue fork.

Katie Lou Brooks, of Ohio, was convicted of aggravated assault during a previous hearing of the Huron County Common Pleas Court.

Tuesday, a tearful Brooks apologized to the victim and his family for the injuries he sustained during a drunken domestic dispute at a Norwalk location.

The victim underwent open heart surgery to repair the damage done during the assault and medical reports indicate his body hasn’t fully recovered, Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said during the hearing. NA Daytona meetings in Holly Hill Florida.

“I know what I did was very wrong. I understand violence isn’t the answer to anything. I am not a violent person,” Brooks told the court. AA Daytona meetings in Sunrise Park.

Since the incident in May, Brooks told the court she has been regularly attended Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, counseling and volunteering around Norwalk. “I’m trying to show I am not an evil person. That this was a mistake, a big mistake,” Brooks said.

However, Brooks’ stellar behavior in the last three months didn’t keep her out of jail. Judge James Conway sentenced her to 90 days in jail, some of which already was served as the case made its way through the criminal justice system.

“I don’t want to sent the wrong message to the public. There has to be a consequence,” Conway said in regards to the severity of the crime.

“Domestic violence is a serious thing and it doesn’t become less serious because it is committed by a woman,” said Leffler, who recommended a longer jail term.

The victim’s injuries were life threatening as the fork pierced not only his heart, but also a lung, Leffler said.Florida 7th judicial Drug Court and AA meetings.

“He’s very lucky to be alive. The doctor saved his life,” Leffler said.

Not only was the victim impacted by the assault, but so were his children, the prosecutor said. Daytona Beach Drug Court participants going to SMART Recovery meetings?

“The children thought they lost their father,” Leffler added.

The victim, however, told the court that “Katie is a good person who made a bad choice.”

“I don’t wish her any harm. And, I don’t think prison will do any good. I don’t want to ruin her life. She has to live with what she has done,” the victim said.

“I just forgive her. I don’t hate her … I just want to move on,” the victim also said.

In addition to the jail time, Brooks was ordered to comply with five years community control sanctions following her release and pay the victim $18,926 in restitution for medical expenses and wages he lost while recovering from the injuries he sustained.

Following the hearing, Brooks was outside the courtroom with the victim and caressed his face as they parted ways

  1. Well this BBQ fork wielding lady seems like an ideal candidate for your loved one to be their sponsor to tell them how to run their life.

    So many defense lawyers telling criminals to go to AA and NA Meetings before their court hearing before the judge is just making an already dangerous situation worse. Then the judges often mandate the continuation of the 12 step meetings.
