Sex Offender Donald James Smith Charged In the Murder of Jacksonville 8 Year Old Cherish Lily Perrywinkle

Man accused of killing Cherish.\

This Sex Offender with an extensive criminal background had just been released from jail May 31st 2013. So many sex offenders are required to attend 12 step meetings to fulfill sex offender probation requirements. It is unbelievable that Alcoholics Anonymous World Services promotes encouraging and actively seeks out in prisons sex predators to attend AA meeting upon their release. Then they invite our teenagers to the same meetings.as these sick individuals. No wonder there is so many sexual assaults by AA and NA members against other 12 step members. Yet they refuse to accept any responsibility.

JACKSONVILLE — The man suspected of killing Jacksonville child Cherish Perrywinkle, 8, has been charged with murder.Members with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that 56-year-old Donald Smith, a registered sex offender who has been convicted in the past of kidnapping, acted alone in the incident.Cherish’s body was found Saturday morning. She went missing while shopping with her mother Friday night.Sheriff’s deputies said in that same press conference Saturday afternoon, Cherish’s mother met Smith at a Dollar General at 7 p.m. Friday night. He apparently befriended them, and asked if he could buy them clothes at a nearby Walmart on Lem Turner Road. The family and Smith then went to Walmart. Officials say they were in the store for several hours.Smith then took Cherish to get some food at a McDonald’s inside the Walmart. He then walked out of the store with her and into a white van. Deputies are not saying what was in the van when they found it.Officials received a call about the missing girl at 11 p.m. Friday.Cherish’s mother provided detectives with a description of the suspect, which investigators then used to identify Smith as possible suspect, a police report said.

When Cherish’s mother was shown a photo of Smith, she identified him as the man who abducted her daughter, deputies said.

Cherish’s body was found at an unnamed church on Broward Road on Saturday. Smith was taken into custody later that morning after officers surrounded his van.

Details emerging about Donald Smith

A quick scan of Smith’s personal file shows he lived at the Palace Mobile Home Park in St. Petersburg for a short time after his release from prison in 2007.  The park, in its infancy back then, is a place where sex offenders can live freely and go through rehabilitation while on probation.

There is very little in Smith’s file about his time there. Nobody there now remembers his stay.  His therapist at the time said the only notes he has on Smith show he was getting on top of his issues and his attendance at therapy sessions was good.

The Department of Corrections sent Smith to the mobile home park shortly after his release, but they allowed him to leave after only eight weeks.

Therapist Don Sweeney worked with Smith at the time and still works with residents who live there today. Sweeney said his time in the facility just wasn’t enough. AA Daytona Beach Meetings and Volusia County AA Meetings Volusia County Intergroup.

“Probationers are sometimes sent here only for a month or two, and there isn’t a whole lot we can do,” he said. “We can maybe break some ice, but we’re talking a couple of years in therapy, minimum.”

Sweeney said that six years later, it is far more common for sex offenders going through the program to live at the Palace for at least two years.

“They come here, and we try to get them to open up, and we do a pretty good job of it, but it takes some time,” he said. “This isn’t a quick fix thing.”

Jacksonville deputies say they did an address check on Smith Friday morning. He had done everything required of him as a registered sex offender up until that point.

An address check is required once a month

  1. I have yet to find any specific info on the conditions of his probation, bail, etc. (Still, we can just smell the funky fingers of 12 step based legal bs here, can we not?)

    http://www.news4jax.com/news/-/475880/20695242/-/k1d0o1/-/index.html

Will the world–will America just sit back and allow our children to be placed in this type of jeopardy in our churches, playgrounds and near children’s schools? I have to have faith that most people are just as unaware and as oblivious to the danger of AA and NA as I was prior to subjecting myself to the zombie madness of it all.

Surely, American parents want to know that AA and NA find it worth the risk to allow criminals and predators around their children. I know I would have wanted to know when I was the mother of little ones.

Maybe we should be sharing more f our information directly with parent and parent saftey groups like:

Do AA and NA simply count innocent children among those who must die in their wicked, saying which states, “Some must die so that others may live!”

Do AA and NA believe that our children must die so that AA can live?

Look at this scene I have posted on my blog from Criminal Minds in an episode called Thirteenth Stepping
    http://wp.me/s30Xu4-644

People think that scene of carnage at an AA meetings is ALL fiction…little….very little do far too many people know…

    • Donald James was denied bail thank goodness. I do not doubt that he has been involved in 12 step programs during his lifetime of crime.

I think you have a point even though it is so terribly disturbing, that AA feels some children must die so others can live. This includes women as well. They are collateral damage to keep AA money machine pumping money to New York and the highly paid staff. Why do they need to be such a high rent area?

  2. Cherish Lily Perrywinkle Murder: Donald James Smith Pleads Not Guilty To Killing Girl Kidnapped From Walmart
    Posted: 06/24/2013 9:35 am EDT

A registered sex offender pleaded not guilty Sunday to the the murder and kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl who disappeared from Walmart.

Donald James Smith, 56, is accused of abducting Cherish Lily Perrywinkle Friday night from a Walmart in Jacksonville, Fla. The girl’s body was found the next morning in a wooded area near a church in the same city.

Smith was denied bail, First Coast News reported. His court-appointed attorney, Fred Gazaleah, admitted that there was never a chance Smith would be released. “Not on this charge,” he said.

Perrywinkle’s mother, Rayne Perrywinkle, told Action News Jax that she was shopping at the Dollar General around 7 p.m. with Cherish and her two younger children when Smith befriended them. The mother had been telling her daughter she would have trouble affording a new dress for her when Smith offered to help.

Cherish wanted the outfit for an upcoming visit with her father.

“[Rayne Perrywinkle] was trying to make sure her child was presentable, her child looked good to see her daddy,” victim advocate Ann Dugger told Jacksonville.com. “You don’t have the money. You don’t have the wherewithal, and somebody comes up and offers to help.”

Rayne Perrywinkle said Smith claimed his wife had a Walmart gift card that they could use to buy food and clothing. Smith and her three children rode in Smith’s van to Walmart to meet his “wife.” The mother admitted she felt something was “creepy” about Smith while riding in the van, and said he started following the family around once they got there.

Shortly before 11 p.m., she says, Smith said he was going to the McDonald’s inside the Walmart store. The mother says she did not realize that Cherish went with him.

She called police at around 11 p.m. to report Cherish had vanished with the man.

Police pulled over Smith’s van Saturday morning, hours before locating the girl’s body.

Smith was convicted of attempted kidnapping in 1993, for which he spent five years in prison and had to register as a sex offender. In 2012, he was convicted of attempted child abuse and impersonating a public employee and spent a year in jail as a result. He was released on May 31, less than a month before he allegedly kidnapped Perrywinkle.

Smith’s next court date is July 16.

  3. It looks like her name had been misspelled in the media. The correct spelling of her name is Cherish Lily Perrywinkle. Poor thing they could not get her name right.

This story makes me sick. This trusting precious little girl taken away and murdered by a monster. Why did they let him out of jail so soon? It is said that he had an extensive criminal background. I seriously doubt he missed being mandated to AA or NA meetings for his crimes if he is a career criminal and child molester.

It is monster predators like Donald James Smith who are in the church basements attending AA meetings and parks to comply with probation or pre-trial requirements. Time will tell us more about Donald J Smith’s background, but one thing I know for sure AA and NA needs to stop encouraging children and minors to attend meetings with pedophiles and violent felons. They are in reality co conspirators in crimes against our children. They create a perfect storm for sex abuse and other violent crime against children and women who attend 12 step programs.

The only thing AA and NA cares about is themselves and the growth and survival of their pitiful cult. The more they can indoctrinate and bring in more money to their coffers the better- at any cost. Even at the cost of lives by murder, rape, suicide and financial ruin to name a few.

Suspect in Charish Perrywinkle murder has long criminal history

    Amber Alert: Charish Perriwinkle
    Jacksonville Sherrif’s Office
Donald James Smith was apprehended by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning and is being questioned in his connection to the kidnapping of Charish Perriwinkle.
    By Staff
Jacksonville, FL — The man arrested for the abduction and murder of 8-year-old Charish Perrywinkle is a known sex offender and has tried to lure children before.

Our partner Action News reports Donald J. Smith tried to lure a young girl away from her mother in 2009. Smith, posing as a DCF worker, called a local mom saying he needed to speak with her child. The mother got suspicious and called police. Smith was arrested.
Last year he pleaded guilty to attempted impersonation of a public employee and attempted child abuse by mental harm. He was sentenced to one year for each count, but with time served, he was out of jail within a year. Smith was released from jail on May 31 of this year. He was out for just 21 days before Charish was found dead.

The mother in the 2009 case told Action News today she is heartbroken and terrified, saying this could’ve been her daughter four years ago. Stephanie Boggs wonders why Smith was out of prison at all.

Smith’s criminal past with children goes back decades.

Records show he was convicted in 1977 for lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under 16.

He was sentenced to five years in prison in 1993 for attempted kidnapping of a minor. He tried to lure three little girls into a van filled with pornography. When he was released, Smith had to register as a sex offender.

Police told Action News that Smith was not on probation during the time of Charish’s disappearance, but he was on JSO’s radar while he lived at his registered address on Segovia Avenue. Around 1 p.m., a woman at that home, believed to be Smith’s mother, was led away by police.

Charish Perriwinkle, 8, was kidnapped and murdered by convited sex offender, Donald James Smith, 56

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A registered sex offender recently released from jail was charged Saturday with murder in the death of an 8-year-old Florida girl abducted while shopping with her mother. Donald James Smith of Jacksonville was taken into custody after police cornered his white van on Interstate 95, said Mike Williams, director of investigations at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Authorities had put out an Amber Alert with details of Smith’s van early Saturday, hours after receiving a 911 call from Charish Perriwinkle’s mother about the missing girl.

Prior to the alleged abduction Friday night, Smith, 56, befriended Charish and her mother at a dollar store, and “offered to take them to Wal-Mart and buy her family some clothes,” Williams said. “They appeared to be down on their luck and he could help them out.” After spending a couple hours inside the Wal-Mart together, Smith offered to buy hamburgers and walked with Charish to the front of the store, Williams said. Instead of stopping to buy the snack, Smith walked Charish outside and the two of them got into his van, Williams said.

The girl’s mother called 911 when she realized Charish and Smith were missing. An Amber Alert was issued, and a tip about a suspicious van spotted in the woods near a church led investigators to Charish’s body Saturday morning. Meanwhile, an officer working at the scene of a traffic crash on Interstate 95 on Saturday morning recognized Smith’s van as it drove past her and called it in.

The highway was shut down while other officers pulled Smith over and arrested him. He has not cooperated with investigators, Williams said, and it was not immediately known whether he had an attorney. Williams declined to answer reporters’ questions about how Charish died or what Smith did in the hours between his disappearance with the girl and his arrest, saying that the investigation remains open.

Smith has been a registered sex offender since a 1993 conviction in Duval County for attempted kidnapping and selling obscene materials. He has been arrested several times since then, most recently in 2009 on a charge of child abuse after making obscene phone calls to a 10-year-old girl, making verbal threats, and impersonating a social worker with the Florida Department of Children and Families who claimed to be investigating the girl’s family.

Smith pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in that case and was released from jail May 31. Williams said Smith had just met with police Friday morning to comply with a state law that requires sex offenders to verify their address once a year. In a highly publicized case in 2009, a 7-year-old northeast Florida girl was abducted while she walked home from school. Police later found Somer Thompson’s body in a Georgia landfill. A man who lived with his parents in Somer’s Orange Park neighborhood pleaded guilty in 2012 to kidnapping, raping and murdering the girl and was sentenced to life in prison.

Somer’s mother was quoted by The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/19qmLAV) as saying that she was sickened by the news of Charish’s abduction.

“Her (Charish’s mother) nightmare has just begun,” Diena Thompson said.
    Story Two:
The body of 8-year-old Charish Lilly Perriwinkle was discovered near a church in Jacksonville, Fla. around 10 a.m. Saturday, Jacksonville.com reported. Perriwinkle was abducted from a Walmart in Jacksonville at around 11 p.m. Friday. Donald James Smith, a registered sex offender, has been arrested and charged with murder, according to Action News Jax.

Police have not commented on the cause of Perriwinkle’s death. Perriwinkle’s mother told police that Smith had befriended her and her daughter at Walmart on Friday night, then disappeared with the girl after saying he was going to take her to the store’s McDonald’s for a snack.

Smith, 56, was previously convicted of attempted kidnapping and lewd and lascivious assault on children. Police tracked down Smith’s van driving on I-95 in Jacksonville at around 9 a.m. Saturday. They have not said whether or not Smith led them to the girl’s body.

  6. Donald J. Smith denied bond by Duval County Judge; pleads not guilty June 23rd 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The registered sex offender who is accused of kidnapping and murdering 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle was denied bond by a Duval County judge during the suspect’s first court appearance Sunday.

Donald J. Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Smith is accused of abducting the 8-year-old girl from the Walmart on Lem Turner Road around 11 p.m. Friday.

Authorities arrested Smith along Southbound Interstate 95 near the Interstate 10 split just after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Police later found the body of Perrywinkle near a church along Broward Road.

Smith is a registered sex offender who was released from custody last month, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

He was previously convicted in Duval County for attempted kidnapping and selling obscene materials.
