Woman Testifies in Court About Brutal Sexual Assault By Man She Met at an NA Meeting

Crown seeks dangerous offender designation for convict who sexually assaulted girlfriend

NA Member testifies about brutal sexual assault by man she met at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. This woman lived to testify about her assault by an NA Member.

Hunter’s August 2011 attack was the third time he assaulted a woman. His criminal record includes a 2002 sexual assault conviction in Punnichy, Sask., and a 2008 sexual assault conviction in Regina.

The dangerous offender hearing continues. The designation is reserved for offenders who show an escalating pattern of violence in their crimes and have little chance of rehabilitation.

Crown seeks dangerous offender designation for convict who sexually assaulted girlfriend

BY RYAN CORMIER, EDMONTON JOURNAL JUNE 18, 2013

EDMONTON – An Edmonton man facing a dangerous offender designation was “wonderful” before he relapsed into drug addiction and violently sexually assaulted her, his former girlfriend testified Tuesday.

The woman testified at the dangerous offender hearing of Vern William Hunter, 39. After he pleaded guilty to sexual assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement, uttering death threats and theft for his August 2011 domestic attack on the woman, the Crown wants him sentenced to prison indefinitely.

The woman, whose name is banned from publication, met Hunter at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. At the time, she said, he was everything she wanted.

“He was awesome. He was wonderful and so kind. He was amazing.”

On Thanksgiving weekend 2010, Hunter and the woman had a relapse and used crack cocaine. After that, Hunter kept using and became a different person. He accused her of cheating on him if she didn’t answer her phone. He traded her clothes for drugs and pawned a camera that contained the last pictures of her father.

In June 2011, the relationship became violent. Hunter left Edmonton for Regina, which his girlfriend believed was an attempt to clean up and kick the drugs. She bought a jar of raspberry jam, his favourite, and left it on the kitchen counter for when he might return home.

When Hunter came back to Edmonton, she recalled, nothing had changed. He hadn’t stopped using drugs. Eventually, he began living in her east Edmonton townhouse again.

In August 2011, court heard, she asked him to move out. In response, Hunter attacked. He choked her into unconsciousness and sexually assaulted her. He bound her to a chair with electrical tape and a belt from her housecoat.

Hunter attacked her again when she tried to escape the home they shared together. He hog-tied her, with her feet and hands bound behind her back. He threatened her with a knife.

“I can stab you and just keep on stabbing, stabbing, stabbing,” he said, according to the statement of facts.

The violent ordeal lasted 12 hours.

Police arrived when the woman’s mother called 911 after her daughter failed to show at work. Hunter, who had left the home to buy drugs, was arrested when he returned to the home. The woman suffered ruptured blood vessels in both eyes, ligature marks on her hands and ankles, bruises and other injuries.

While he was in prison, Hunter and the woman contacted each by letter and phone though Hunter was under a no-contact order. They even made plans to marry after he served a jail sentence. Those hopes are long gone, the woman testified.

“It took me a year after the attack to realize that Vern was a bad person. I thought the drugs made him a bad person.”

Hunter had little reaction as his ex-girlfriend tearfully read a victim impact statement between loud sobs.

“The stranger in the alley, the monster in the closet, the boogeyman under the bed, is no longer a faceless terror for me. Now it is Vern,” she wailed in the courtroom. “You were supposed to take care of me.”

  1. Is there any way to keep them out if you know there past. I have a friend scared because there’s a creepy guy going to meetings and he’s already got away with attacking a woman.

  2. I had read about this earlier today. It is so heartbreaking. She looks adorable and has such a cool name. The one link you have is the Donald James Smith born September 4th 1956. http://www.poedit.org/crime_watch/sex_offenders/donald_james_smith_82782.html The other article sounds like him too- just the wrong picture. But a CNN article did say he had an extensive criminal background which gives more of a possibility of being mandated to AA or NA.

It is said he had been current on ” therapy”, I am not sure if that means going to AA meetings or just therapy or both. The fact is though even if Donald James Smith is not an AA member, so many sex offenders and predators are mandated to AA and NA meetings every day in this country. It is a standard probation requirement for sex offenders that have any alcohol or drug abuse issues. They are under no obligation to notify anyone at a meeting why they are there. Often they do with the total acceptance of the group, as they accept anyone including minors to be exposed to sex predators.

I believe more research will discover sex offender Donald James Smith probation requirements. What an evil sick SOB!!!!!

  3. This is HEARTBREAKING beyond words…

Little Charish Perriwinkle was recently found dead after convicted sexual predator supposedly took the 8 year old girl to get McDonald’s. Police say 8-year-old Charish Perriwinkle has been found dead near Highland Baptist Church along Broward Road in Jacksonville FL.

I am not stating that this man is or was a fellowship member. I do not know. I just have a few…
    QUESTIONS:
Do we have any further info on whether or not this long time sexual predator was also a member of AA or NA. Is the fact that this convicted predator was not in prison due to some deals made to go to meetings rather than to do time?
If he had been imprisoned, this precious little girl would still be alive. Her body was found at this church. Is it a church used for meetings? On their website there is not specific meeting listed but look at this page: http://www.highlandsbaptist.net/site/search1.asp?sec_id=180002586&zoom_query=NA

Apr 1, 2011 … Yes, we have a Twelve Step. Recovery format along with other teaching which is helpful in alcohol and drug recovery, but Celebrate. Recovery …

The 12 step racket is in there to some degree that I am yet unable to suss out.
There are two predators with similar names. Which one is the real one? One of these men admitted to being a crack addict. Are either of these predators current or former members of “The Fellowship”?
