Siscoe’s wife is in court for her part in covering up the torture. You cannot be too careful in AA meetings. Wife didn’t understand consequences of torturing husband, sentencing hearing told
The silence of a woman whose husband was brutally tortured by her new boyfriend was out of self-preservation and she knew during the three-month period of abuse that what was happening was illegal, court heard Tuesday.
And each time she had a chance to do something about what was happening, she chose her safety and that of her unborn child over her husband’s.
Dr. Percy Wright, a forensic psychologist, told an Ontario Superior courtroom Tuesday afternoon that despite the woman’s mental disabilities, she was able to understand that what her boyfriend, John Michael Siscoe, 40, was doing to her husband was inherently wrong.
“She understood keeping a secret and the implications that come with it, he said.
He added her strong verbal comprehension, despite her low IQ, indicates she knew the physical, sexual and psychological abuse of her husband was horrendous, which she described in her police interview in 2010 as “brutal.”
Even when a nurse came to their Toronto apartment daily to help the victim after a medical procedure, during the three months he was subjected to the torture, she made no effort to get the victim help, the court heard. When police came to rescue the victim, and in the company of a police officer who asked her what happened to the victim, she lied and said he got in a fight, the prosecutor told the court.
“She knew what was wrong,” Wright said. “She knew this was something to be hidden. She took part in the stories Mr. Siscoe told to her.”
In a video of the woman being interviewed by police in 2010, she said it was inevitable Siscoe would turn his violent tendencies toward her and she feared for her life.
“It was the way I saw him with (the victim),” she said. “It was only a matter of time.”
Crown attorney Paul Leishman challenged Dr. Derek Pallandi during the doctor’s testimony at the woman’s sentencing hearing Tuesday.
The 30-year-old woman, whose name is subject to a publication ban, had earlier been described by Pallandi as lacking the ability to protect the wellbeing of her husband.
Both doctors agreed the fact she showed no emotion when recounting the torture to police was strange considering the chain of events.
Leishman countered that she was able to protect herself, her relationship with Siscoe and her unborn child.
Pallandi said while she would show signs of cognitive understanding that what she was doing was wrong, she was under immense stress, particularly from Siscoe.
Her decisions were made, he said, without thinking about the long-term consequences.
“She doesn’t think globally, but momentarily, Pallandi said. “She was being coached by Siscoe over time. She’d been told this is what the party line is going to be.”
When asked if she cared more about her relationship with Siscoe and her baby than her husband’s torture and confinement, Pallandi said he couldn’t disagree.
Siscoe, 40, and the victim’s wife pleaded guilty in January 2012 in the Superior Court of Justice to numerous charges, including endangering a life and sexual assault causing bodily harm, from Oct. 31, 2009, until police rescued the man on Jan. 19, 2010.
During that January court appearance, it took 75 minutes for Leishman to read aloud the 25-page description of the victim’s confinement and brutal torture over the course of three months. AA Daytona Beach Meetings.

OMG! This is hard to read what this Toronto AA member did after being invited to Siscoes’s home after an AA meeting. Then his wife ends up sleeping with the guy, getting pregnant and watching and helping this AA member torture her husband. Sick, Sick, Sick. I hope she gets lots of jail time.

Was she a callous wife who cared more about her lover than her husband? Or was she a woman with a low IQ whose gullible nature was taken advantage of?
A judge will soon decide how a woman whose husband was beaten with household objects, doused in lighter fluid and set on fire, and forced to live in a closet will be punished for her part in the crimes.
The sentencing hearing for the 32-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect her husband’s identity, continued Thursday in the Superior Court of Justice.
She and her live-in boyfriend at the time, John Michael Siscoe, pleaded guilty in January 2012 to numerous charges including endangering a life and sexual assault causing bodily harm.
The Crown asked that the woman be sentenced to 10 years behind bars, less time served. Crown attorney Paul Leishman argued the woman acted in her own self-interest by allowing the beatings to continue.
“She could have done so many things so often to stop this, and she never did, because she cared more about her relationship with Mr. Siscoe,” he said.
The defence is seeking a sentence equivalent to a total of roughly four years. Defence lawyer Vivian Ropchan painted the woman, who is intellectually impaired, as someone who was easily influenced by Siscoe, and whose actions reflected the power he held over her.
The agreed-upon statement of facts states Siscoe was the main perpetrator of the beatings, and the wife either watched them take place or was elsewhere in the apartment.
The woman read a letter out to the court, saying it “hurts” to know her husband still suffers as a result of the abuse.
“I am really truly sorry, I just want forgiveness,” she said.
Justice John McMahon, who has previously referred to the case as the “worst case of physical abuse” he’d seen in his career, challenged both lawyers’ portrayals of the woman.
He acknowledged she is more than a passive observer, but challenged Leishman’s suggestion her involvement was on par with Siscoe’s.
McMahon also expressed concern about the woman’s demeanour throughout the ordeal.
“It just, I mean, this is her husband,” he said. “I mean, the lack of empathy to watch another human being light someone’s private area on fire . . . that, at least to me, seems troubling.”
McMahon is expected to deliver his decision next Thursday.
