A well-known entertainer will appear in court charged with taking her young daughter to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting – while drunk.

The 40-year-old from Birmingham was ‘heavily intoxicated’ when she and the ‘frightened’ child turned up to the 11pm meeting at a city church, sources claimed.

Officers called to the scene took her to a police station where she spent a night in the cells, while her ‘distressed’ daughter was taken to a ‘place of safety’, according to the source.

The woman – said to be a well-known figure in the West Midlands entertainment industry – will this week appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court charged with being drunk in charge of a child under seven years of age.

She cannot be named for legal reasons, but it is understood she regularly travels abroad for work.

The incident took place at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at a Birmingham church at around 11pm on New Year’s Eve.

It is understood the case centres around allegations the woman arrived at the late-night meeting ‘visibly drunk’ with the youngster in tow.

A source said: ‘On New Year’s Eve the mum took her little daughter to an AA meeting, late in the evening.

‘The woman was allegedly heavily intoxicated.

‘Her little daughter was very distressed and frightened and was later taken away from her mother to a house of safety.

‘The woman was arrested and spent the night in custody.’

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: ‘A 40-year-old woman was charged on March 13 with an offence of being drunk in charge of a child aged under seven years old.

‘The charge relates to an alleged incident just before 11pm on New Year’s Eve.

‘She has been bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday.’
